Mini-USB Cables For Convenience and Flexibility

USB-compatible devices and cables are so omnipresent in our daily lives that we tend not to think about them very much until we need them. Or until we need a variant of the standard USB 2.0 A connector but don’t have it. The most common USB variant aside from the standard 4-pin Male A plug is the mini USB connector. Used for hooking up peripherals like digital cameras and cell phones to PCs, the mini usb cable is a must-have for any home or office workspace.

One thing many people don’t realize about the humble mini USB cable is that there are actually two distinct types. The one you’re probably most familiar with is the mini USB 2.0 A to Mini-B 5-pin cord. If you need to sync your iTunes library between your smart phone and your computer, this is the one to use. There’s also the less common USB 2.0 A to Mini-B 4-pin, which is a proprietary standard used mostly with Sony digital products.

The default standard USB 2.0 cable is still the most commonly used connector for easy data transfer and removable storage access. However, the USB 3.0 standard is steadily gaining traction in the mini USB cable world. USB 3.0 delivers at least three times the data throughput of USB 2.0, with the potential to be many times faster as the software and hardware supporting it improves. Fortunately, any mini USB 2.0 cables that you already have will work with USB 3.0 devices thanks to built-in backwards compatibility.
